Help! MAde a huge mistake!
Permalink Closed

Good afternoon everyone.

Firstly, let me apologise for the following message, it shows a distressing level of ineptitude!

We took on our first employee back in June last year.

Have been using basic paye tools to work his payroll and calculate what is due to HMRC.

I have now realised I wasn't sending the information in real time! I'd have the ni and tax paid by the correct date the following month, but I'll only have submitted the employee payment on that day!

Thought I'd correct it by doing this months payment in real time, but of course that shows that he is paid double for this month and has thus taxed him accordingly!

In summary...help! I don't know what to do! We can't afford a £100 fine for each month I've submitted the payment late!

I'm assuming you've been submitting the RTI every month, albeit the following month, after sending the tax/ni due?

I'm not familiar with the HMRC software but, if you've issued a payslip on the correct date, I'm surprised that the software hasn't given you warning that it's a late submission.  It should have asked for a reason why you were submitting late.

I'm guessing that when you've not confirmed the payment until the tax/ni has been sent, and the software is assuming that you've paid your employee then and not earlier.  I say this as that is the only way you would end up with a double payment in the same month. (unless basic tools has some quirk in it that I'm not aware of)

Lol Shaun. Sometimes I have a huge problem going to bed til 2 or 3 in the morning, but always try to be in bed by 12.  Last night I went to bed about 11.45 but couldn't sleep so got up at 1 am and watched Caribbean T20 cricket, then surfed the net until 4 am then read and got my head down at 5 am.  Just got to work now so it's a hard slog til 7 pm.  What an exciting life we bookkeepers lead hey biggrin

OMG - another bookkeeper/accountant ailment. From this site alone it seems like dodgy knees and insomnia are rife amongst the industry. You do realise that surfing the net makes it worse - white light of the PC makes you think its daylight! Although I wouldve thought watching cricket would send you to sleep pretty quickly - bores the hell out of me! Give me footy any day.

Got grandparents staying this week so additional pressure on time but as a rule Jo I find the following to be true.

In the day we have loads of work to do but clients want to forever phone us to either ask if its done yet, tell us what they have given us is wrong / incomplete, Alter the priorities of work that they have given us or seemingly just want to have a bit of a general chit chat.

So, we spend all day and half of the evening fielding clients but in the knowledge that we can get their work done once it's too late for them to think about calling us.

Then of course we also have our own work and CPD to fit in

My boys now off school until he goes to college and I have to say that I have difficulty knowing what day of the week that it is as weekends are absolutely no different to any other day... Except that I switch the phones off when Humans comes on on a Sunday evening.

Lol, these hours are just like being back in banking aren't they!

I have only one customer who gets away with ringing me on a Sunday and he pays a big fee for the privilege. You should turn yours off more often, or not answer it....sounds like they need re-training.

At least in Corporate if you worked hard you also played hard.

Hi Joanne, surfing the net is my biggest problem, and usually the main problem in not going to bed at a reasonable hour.  As the Nolans would say, I've gotta pull myself together!  But the good thing about insomnia is there are only 8 sleeps to Christmas biggrin

And T20 cricket is not like a test match, which can be boring, (1) but a game played in approx 75 mins a side with good batsmen smashing it around the park.  I like watching all sports, but cricket, footy, rugby and tennis are my mainstays.

Hi Shaun. On the odd occasion I will get a call in the evening, and very rarely on a weekend, but I take them anyway and deal with them the next day.  It's not really an issue to me as I get on well with my clients but there's going to come a time when someone will abuse it.

The Nolans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Say no more about that one. Shaun - block your ears before they start to bleed.

2 1/2 hours of cricket is still far too long. The best time Ive had at a cricket club is when they opened their grounds for a gig. Oh and when I was the only woman at a sportsmans lunch and a famous old boy cricketer looked after me and was concerned every time anyone swore. Then there was the time I sat in the posh part of Lancashire Cricket club watching some match or other with the then board members/VIPs - well I say watching, more like chatting and having a drink! Oh and the open days at the local cricket clubs which consisted entirely of sitting in the sun with a gaggle of girls with a picnic and lots of booze watching the boys (I dont even remember anything about the actual cricket!!).

We've all got our faults lol - I thought they were ace. A few cheesy songs I admit but some good stuff on their albums, and they could definitely sing.
