Contract for a builder
Permalink Closed

Hello.

Please if someone could help me.

I do small buidling works, painting, plumbing etc and I need to make sure I get paid so I need a contract that the client sign before starting the job.

Where can I get a contract template ?

How much is the percentage of the deposit that the client should pay before the work starts ? Lets say the job is £100 how much should I charge when signing the contract ?

Thank you very much

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

shouldn't that question be on a builders forum?

even where people here have access to such contracts if they share them, you depend upon such in a court of law and it proves not water tight then you could seek recompense from the person who provided the contract.

Thats why people don't share engagement letters.

sorry that it's not a helpful response in this instance,

kind regards,

Shaun.

My brothers are plumbers (as was my father, grandfather and great-grandfather) and I don't think they'd get much work if they were to ask for a deposit on a job that was going to cost £100 in total. Maybe they're doing it wrong and should be getting a deposit - but the business has survived nearly 120 years so they must be doing something right.

They might stipulate interim payments based on materials being purchased and percentage of work completed etc. but they'd never ask for a deposit before work was started.

Hi Adrian
I have used a fair few of the trade guys over the years and have never paid a deposit. I didn't even pay for my boiler until the thing had been installed. You wouldn't get any work in this neck of the woods if you asked for money up front, or even a contract. Most just go off a quote (rather than an estimate), although maybe that is common where you live?

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
