Hi all , I set up my bookkeeping business in April and to date only have one client . I must add I found this client on indeed he was advertising for a self employed bookkeeper.
I've advertised on gumtree and all the free local sites . I've built up a basic website and advertised on Facebook but haven't really found anything .
I've had several conversations with people but no new business .
Can anyone give me any ideas ?
I still work full time so I want to keep it small but would like 3-4 clients to start with .
Thanks in advance
Nicola
Ask your one client first of all, if they know of anyone else who needs a bookkeeper and will they recommend you. That and networking networking networking! Maybe ask around in work if people know of anyone who needs a bookkeeper - you will be surprised where leads come from. I dont bother with Facebook and I dont actually have a website but the one thing about the latter is that you will never get any business from it unless people can find it without knowing your business name. My biggest client was gained through Gumtree so target it when no-one else in your area is doing (dont you have to pay on there now?). Keep going!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
Gumtree is £4.95 so not very expensive . And I plan on using Google Adwords when I know more what I'm doing with it (it's a bit out of my depth at mo )
I will approach my client , and I've emailed a few networking groups , I can only attend evening groups at moment with me working 8-4.
With networking , are the groups specifically business type orientated ? Or do they have several business types at the same event ?
Also , can you advise on approach ?
I find when people ask me a price I can't help but undersell myself . Feel like I'm apologising for charging for the service . (I know this sounds silly but being an accountant I've never had to charge before , I've always just received a salary )
