I have a new client whom has asked me to complete the VAT and year end accounts etc but they didn't realise they had to still submit vat to a vat account online throughout the year.
Only a small client so it's not taken too much time, the whole year has been submitted, but I am struggling making paying by direct debit and HMRC are the worst establishment to contact. Has or Is anyone else having problems submitting payments?
Hi Jackie You have to set up a new direct debit at least three days before you VAT return is due, so if you have submitted it then you cannot do it for this return. You can pay by lots of other methods, eg faster payments or by debit card, so I would get your client to do this as soon as possible. Info is available on the direct gov website.
By the way if setting up a debit debit for the next one, your client should really do this otherwise they are not working in line with the mandate they provided to the Bank, unless of course you are a signatory on the Bank account/they have authorised you to do so.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
I have only ever done one annual accounting job. We submitted the first return after setting up the direct debit, the whole amount was taken, and then HMRC automatically took instalments.
As Jo says, you will have to pay by card or cheque, if you have already submitted the return. Set up the DD so that installments will be taken. You may get notification in the post that a payment is due, and you'd have to check if the DD had taken, and pay manually if not.
