I have a new client who would like to authorise me with HMRC to submit his VAT returns and self assessments. He has a previous bookkeeper that he is terminating services with for various reasons whom he had authorised with HMRC. He thinks that in completing a new authorisation request online that this will supercede any previous authorisation. Is this correct ? I would have assumed you would need to send written instructions to HMRC to remove the previous authorisation.
HMRC can only hold one agent record at a time......a real bug bear of mine and many an argument Ive had with them. I have a client who has Accountant with agent status for Corporation Tax, but I deal with the Companies foreign tax issues so when I try to get anything out of them on certificates of residency/Withholding tax I end up jumping through twice as many hoops as is necessary. As soon as you are added as agent it will knock the incumbent off their records.

Just a thought - is the current bookkeeper aware you are taking over? Just thinking if he is trying to get his ducks in a row before telling that person then you could lose out on a valuable handover.
