CIS - dates to report
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

I have recently taken on a new client who is in a bit of a mess, and hasn't submitted a SA return for 3 years, so trying to work through his paperwork quickly.  He is a sole trader, VAT registered, CIS registered, with year-end date of 31 October.  He is my first Sole Trader who has not used the financial year (5th April) as his year end so I am trying to clarify which dates to use for the returns.  I have determined from HMRC that for his SA return, I use figures from 1 Nov-31 Oct, submitted by the following 31st January.  However, to calculate the figure for CIS suffered, I am unsure whether I use figures from the invoices paid between 1 Nov-31 Oct as per his accounts, or do I use the CIS suffered figure from 6th April-5th April (following the tax year)?  The more I think about it, the more I confuse myself!

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Gill

On the tax return you will include the CIS tax for the y/e 5th April.

So, assuming the first tax return you need to complete is for 2011-12, then you need to include the figures from the accounts for the y/e 31.10.11 and the CIS tax for the y/e 05.04.12.
