Printer recommendations
Permalink Closed

So my old HP photosmart has finally given up the ghost... Its been an absolute pain for ages, but I have kept pressing on as I haven't really been working much (kids and all). Now I need to get a new one, are there any recommendations that don't cost an absolute fortune to buy/ink. I am only part-time working so on a bit of a budget.

Thanks Lyndsey

No specific recommendation, but something I will always point out:

Unless your printing requirements include lots of photos, for which inkject printers tend to produce better results, then a laser printer is more economical.

The printer is a higher initial outlay than an inkjet, and toner cartridges tend to be more pricey than ink cartridges - but the cost per printed page is usually a lot cheaper with a laser.

The downside is that if you need colour, lasers can cost a lot of desk space. And be heavy.

If you've got a spare £50 then I would recommend an epson printer. They are relaiable, and although once an avid HP fan, I have used epson for at least 12 years, and swear by them

This one is £50 but if you can afford £22 more I would go for the XP620  (I have the slightly older 615)

Original ink cartridges can be dear, at around £40 a set.  But I use compatibles myself, which are around £5 from ebay.

Hi Lyndsey

I used to spend loads of money on ink cartridges until I signed up for HP Instant Ink.  I can't recommend it enough.  Has saved me loads on cartridges and you don't even need to buy/order ink.  It just turns up at your door before you need it.  You must have "HP Instant Ink-compatible" printer though.  I've been using this one (HP Envy) from Curry's and love it.  Might not be to everyone's taste, but on a budget I've found it so much better than my previous two:

Good evening.

The volume of pages you need to print may have bearing on ink jet or laser.

Our latest costing shows our laser to be far more economical and faster than our ink jet.

We only use an inkjet for letters to be posted which is colour for our letter header.
