Joined today, looks like a nice helpful and friendly forum. I've been self-employed as a bookkeeper for yonks and have typically used AccountingWeb in the past.
Joined today to ask a specific question, but already got my answer from searching past topics.
What was the subject that you were going to ask about?
The only problem with old posts is that tax regulations and accounting standards change where when people post here we very seldom go back and update old posts so it's possible to read things that are no longer true.
Looking forwrds to chatting as you settle in here.
All the best,
Shaun.

Hi Giulio Its a hello back from me. We love this forum, so I hope you do too - we are much nicer than the folks over on AWeb I see you are based in Chester - I get down there occasionally to meet with a clients Accountants - lovely city!
BTW - you can add your name to your message so that it appears below the signature line - try editing your profile. Just saves people looking it up each time they respond to you.
Enjoy!

Welcome t'forum Giulio, grab a comfy chair and make yourself at home.
I've got mixed feelings about aweb, the layout's all the rage nowadays. Check out the Digital Spy website, which adopts a similar style. I hate the new any answers though, far too large and intrusive.

same here. I've still not forgiven HMRC for replacing perfectly good content with the useless detritus that tells you only what they think a casual reader with no accounting knowledge might need to read.
Nothing can be done about the awful fonts that they are now using on Aweb but just hit CNTL and Minus a few times to get the writing back down to a more professional size.
Now the question is, is it just coincidence that Giulio moves over to our site the day that they release their new format? Are we to expect a new influx of chartered to our ranks over the next week?
Wonder if they'll keep that new format or decide that fixing things that are not broken is a silly idea and go back to what we are all comfortable with?

I've hit that by mistake, when I didnt know it was an option, so of course then I didn't know how to reverse it! Talk about panic, lol.
aweb and digital spy are great for if you have lost your glasses (on top of your head)

I've just looked at Accounting Web. As John says, that sort of style is popular these days, and it's what I refer to as the "tabletification" of the web.
The reason I call it tabletification is that such designs are intended to make the site easier to use for small/touchscreen devices - such as tablets. Which is fine if a phone or tablet is what everyone is using, but that's not the case, and the experience is less positive for users of desktops or laptops.

Cheers for the heads up Vince. I've just been over there and quickly updated my account to remove my company name. (you do have to put a company name but there is nothing to stop you putting something like "non of your business" in that field.
One of my questions over there was asking about getting rid of staff in order to try and save a company. It was not about making more money for the company, it was about trying to save the jobs of some of the workers rather than everyone going down with a sinking ship but of course thats not going to be how the question is viewed. Its certainly not the sort of thing that you want the staff of that company to realise that you are asking yet Aweb just blatantly plastered my company name against an admitedly very old post (even before I joined here) thats unlikely to be read but it still exists there.
Mines only a minor example. Others could lose their jobs over questions that have been asked and comments made as their employers names are now associated with comments that the employer may fundamentally disagree with or may even be detrimental to the employers business for such to exist in the public domain.
For professionals who spend their lives guarding the security and confidentiallity of client data they seem to have been awfully cavalier about sharing too much detail of those who have made it the site that it is today.

News update from Aweb that they are rolling out changes to restore poster privacy which should be applied within the next thirty minutes.
Well done to the Aweb team for listening to posters legitimate concerns and acting upon such quite quickly.

When it comes to submitting any information to a website it's always important to remember that there is no guarantee that something private will remain that way. This is a good example of that; members provided information to the site that they thought wouldn't be made public, and with this change it was made public. Always consider that when providing any information, and hold back anything you feel you might want kept private.
Even if the website claims certain information will remain private, they can't guarantee it - because they may have as yet undiscovered security flaws that will one day no longer be undiscovered, and if it's the wrong people that discovers them, they may see their [users] data published without consent.
That aside, though, it's good to hear they've decided to rethink this. The first reply in that link gave the impression they'd shrugged their shoulders and said "tough".

A late in the day heads up - but I spotted this before leaving this morning and quickly changed mine. Funny thing was - mine had such old details on, it was a company that no longer exists!
I wonder if Aweb will listen to all the comments about the 'any answers' section.
Ive just posted something on there and if I look at the chain of responses, mine is the latest one yet it comes in the middle of the screen. I did do the post as a 'quote' to an earlier posting. Now I cannot even recall if that was the way it used to be before, but it just seemed odd and maybe not helped by having huge print, which means I have to keep scrolling despite the size of my screen. Or remember to use Shaun's earlier screen altering suggestion! Its taken me all my time to remember Cont C and V. Although I am quite good with ü ö ß and the like when Im emailing in German. lol

@ Shamus, I'll open a new thread re my original question, just to make sure.
@ Joanne, good idea...I'll add a signature. We probably deal with the same accountants in Chester...but for some reason most of mine are based in Liverpool.
I haven't got a problem with Aweb's new look. I normally browse it via the emails on my mobile...good for a chuckle when the pedants from there are having a battle
