How does the transfer of 10% personal allowance work?
Permalink Closed

Hi,

Please can someone explain to me how the transfer of 10% personal allowance works please?

When filling in the tax return I can only find the option to transfer 10% from the client to wife but the wife isn't employed and therefore wants to transfer 10% of her PA to her husband.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the link, very useful however I have another question.
It states you need to prove your identity but looking at the requirements the wife doesn't have any of the mentioned. She doesn't work so no payslips or P60. Doesn't receive any interest into their account and don't receive tax credits or child benefits. So any idea how to get around this?
Thanks

You also need a way to prove your identity. This can be one of the following:

the last 4 digits of the account that your child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid into
the last 4 digits of an account that pays you interest
details from your P60
details from any of your 3 most recent payslips

I would suggest the wife's national insurance number as a form of identity.

It does state the NI for both parties but also identity.

Before you apply

You need you and your partners National Insurance numbers.

You also need a way to prove your identity. This can be one of the following:

the last 4 digits of the account that your child benefit, tax credits or pension is paid into
the last 4 digits of an account that pays you interest
details from your P60
details from any of your 3 most recent payslips

I see, I would ring up HMRC and ask them what to do then, often the online system does not cover all bases/situations as in this case.

I thought the whole point was that the donor had to be earning something, and as she isnt in this case then they cant do it. But I could be wrong. Also - that agents cannot do this, unless there has been an update which Ive not yet read as i have a backlog to catch up on. So I would just let them phone - nothing to lose apart from the interminable wait for HMRC to bother answering the phone

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

Thanks for your replies. I've advised for them to call HMRC themselves.
