Can anyone help me with this. It's not for me it's for someone else I work with who is trying to find a full set of accounts for the previous year as the previous accountant has left no workings or records anywhere - none that match the balances in the accounts software anyway. The only records he has are the abbreviated accounts which isn't enough to work from.
Is there a way I can get a copy or view the full set of accounts filed with HMRC for the previous year? I've logged in and had a look around myself I can't find a way to access it.
Can anybody tell if there is a way to get a copy? It's got to be filed in a week I feel a bit bad as I put him forward to do the job
The previous accountant must, in response to an ettiquette letter from an qualified practicing accountant with a recognised professional body pass to the new accountant at a minimum the last full set of accounts and the trial balance upon which such was based. If this is not provided in a timely manner then the accountant may be reported to their professional body.
More than three months would be considerd unreasonable so your lead time is totally insufficient (how long has this other person been sitting on this issue?).
HMRC have a copy hived away but they are don't share and they won't even talk to you without a 64-8 in place. Even if they did send you a copy they would not send it within a week.
Your best option remains the previous accountant.
Sorry, thats probably not what you want to hear,
Shaun.

Did the client not approve the accounts when they were submitted last year? They should have had, at the very least, a draft copy to sign off. And then the final copy once submitted.

it's all a bit of a shambles really, there was no previous accountant he was an employee that went off sick and has not been contactable since he left 9 months ago. So there is very little chance of getting anything from them.
The guy I put forward for it has had months to sort it out but I thought I'd try and help.
There is only a copy of the abbreviated accounts and none of the full set of accounts and nobody knows nothing about it, there are no workings or paper trails anywhere.
I'm just the bookkeeper for the client (the previous guy did both the bookkeeping and accounts) so nobody's paying me to worry about it, I do dread going in next week though.
Thanks again for your replies, I feel like I have at least tried to help now.
This is probably a long shot but have a look on the computer for CT600. It's a pdf file that's used to submit the accounts using HMRC's own software. Unless he's filed using 3rd party software this will be the obvious choice.
It should be possible to open that file and view the data. From memory there isn't a trial balance but there is the profit and loss and balance sheet entries so it might be possible to get enough info to help with the return the new accountant is trying to complete.

beyond the CT600 though as you know the PC that it was lodged from the likelihood is that the iXBRL files containing both the actual tax calculation and the accounts are still on that machine.
Could you not do a search of the machine for all .HTML suffixed files then look for any with the word XBRL in them or failing that sort by date and look at those around the time that the tax return was filed if you know that.
If you find one file look at what else is in the same folder as anyone with any sense keeps files that are filed together stored together.
Might take a while to find it as most machines will have thousands of .HTML suffixed files on them, but, there may be light at the end of the tunnel here.
Good luck
Shaun.

I'll have a search, I did spent a lot of time searching before but not for a copy of the filed return. I don't know much about accounts for a limited company so I wasn't sure what I was looking for.
