Hi,

Hope you are all well.

Just a quick question - client requires a nil self assessment tax return - what additional questions or work needs to be carried out/asked before submitting the return?

Ascertain that client requirement is correct

i) What has he been living off and when since
ii) Have final accounts been *submitted for previous sources

Regards,
Tim

They mentioned that they have been living off savings which are from a large inheritance.

And does that large inheritence earn interest?

Ask to see the associated bank statements.

I would be asking yourself why they would need your to complete a 'nil' return- lets face it they dont need a professional for that do they. Like the boys say - there is 'income' in the mix somewhere. Make sure you get signatures on the tax return before you submit it and remind them that the responsibility for it being correct is entirely theirs.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
