There has been an issue with the VAT at my workplace. I do the preparation of the returns then my boss checks and submits.
The issue is to do with place of supply and whether we should charge VAT or not.
My boss has asked me to draft a letter to HMRC outlining the issues and then he want's me to sign it.
I was not involved in this issue from the start so do not know 100% what has gone on. I have been briefed on it.
I have said i am not happy about signing the letter as I do not submit the returns and as he is the department manager I feel he should be taking responsibility for it not me who was not involved in the issue from the start. Only getting involved months later!
His response is as follows:
1. You deal with VAT issues; not just preparing the return but reviewing expense claims, etc. And youve been on a course and often check the internet for VAT related issues.
2. HMRC are likely to respond in August but I will be away for most of it. I dont want a letter/email which might warrant a further response to sit in my tray waiting for my return.
3. In your Finance role and with your years of experience to draw on this is a task I believe you can oversee. Time to put those letters after your name to good use.
The course he is referring to was a one day course and that does not make me an expert.
This letter has still not been finalised nor the supporting information that needs to go with it.
This issue was raised in November last year then brought up in March this year and yet still not sorted.
This sounds like poor management on my part by my boss who should have dealt with it sooner.
Seems to me that if there is a lot at stake then he should be asking a VAT specialist never mind someone that wasn't even involved. I think you're right to be wary and the most I'd do is offer a P.P. after his or the firms name.
