Question re Journal/loan
Permalink Closed

I'm trying to figure out the right way of doing a journal and I'm sure it's incredibly simple but I've now over thought it so hoping someone may be able to help:-

Employer gave employee £100 cash last week as a loan/advance

Payroll now done and the plan was to take 100 back.

Employee gave us an invoice for £30 for supplies he bought with part of the money

£70 taken out of his pay to pay back remainder of loan.

How do I journal this between loan account 2300, net wages 2220 and Cash account 1231

TIA

Hi
Ignore for a minute the invoice for supplies. Process the £100 deduction. Then pay the invoice through cash.

Does that help or do you need a full work through?

Its the whole work through I'm having trouble with because we only took £70 from his wages rather than the £100. For some reason I just can't get anything to balance.

Hi Sammy
So normal journals would be:-

Wages journal.JPG

When you pay staff you debit net wages the £1344.64 which clears the net wages account to nil.

So when you paid the extra £100 last week, you should have debited net wages £100, so the balance on net wages would be £100dr

This week you will debit net wages £1244.64 (to repay the £100 he borrowed)

Debit £30.00 to petty cash

Credit  £1274.64 to the staff member via Bank/cash, however you normally pay him   (ie this weeks wage LESS the actual amount you owe him of £70)

Then key the invoice the to the supplier as usual and pay via a credit to the petty cash (or just key it as a payment to petty cash) £30.

Job done - hopefully!

Easiest way to look at it  - is to break it down into three separate process, so to speak:-

Just got to start with the usual journals, then adjust for the £100 as if no other transaction took place, then bring the £30 into the mix.

HTH

Ok I think that makes sense - I'm not there till Tues and my husband is talking at me while I am trying to read so not actually taking anything in properly (he's now singing along to McFly, in my ear!!!). I'd already done the payroll journal, but I think I will reverse it and start again so that everything works. Thank you for your help....again.

Haha  I'm reminded of the day my wife queued up for 45 mins to get Duncan's  from Blue autograph, at the age of 42!!  Giggling like a schoolgirl she was, especially when she got a kiss on the cheek.

However, I don't even think that beats me dragging my 9 year old lad to see Spiceworld the Movie, because I was too self conscious to go on my own with all the teenies. I don't think he's quite forgiven me for that yet biggrinbiggrin

I had a new, autographed item arrive in the post this very morning. A DVD ("Reinvention") about Gary Numan and signed by him. I have quite a few things signed by him, actually (as well as other things by other peeps, such as books by their authors).

Which is ironic, because autographs don't actually interest me that much - in the case of the other items, it's been either pot luck, or a side effect of buying directly from the source, and so on: I have never, asked someone for their autograph, and probably never will.

With this DVD, it went on sale the other day but only *with* the autograph. I suspect unsigned ones will become available at a later point.

That particular song is a blast from the past - but Numan is very much a blast from the present. He's still recording, and the stuff he's doing now is massively better than things like that.

I've seen him in concert loads of times - though not recently. I think every appearance in Bristol from around 1985 until the end of the 20th century (and in the late 1980s, also one in London). There have been plenty of tours since (and one coming up), but timing has always sucked.

Almost made it to a concert in London last October - the timing seemed so perfect; concert in London on the Friday night, and I was exhibiting at an event in Feltham on the Saturday. However, in the end I couldn't leave Bristol on the Friday until gone 6pm, so it wasn't to be.

That said, while I love the music, I hate the crowd, and I don't like having to stand up throughout the show (best concert I ever went to was Tori Amos, at which the audience remained seated throughout!) - and these days I'd probably get a headache due to how loud it is. I'm probably better off not trying. :)

"Shaun will be weeping on the floor at the thought of such music!!!"

In that case, I dread to think how he'd react to something more up to date, such as Love Hurt Bleed or I Am Dust.

And after hearing those, now consider that my radio station of choice is Classic FM. ;)

How flaming annoying about the concert last year. Agree with you on the standing aspect at concerts - not sure if thats a sign of age, but I wouldnt mind with some of them if there was dancing going on!

Liking the Love Hurt Bleed one, not sure about the other, might have to listen a bit more.

Shaun's ears are bleeding now! lol

Although it's easy to assume it's an age thing, whatever age I am for any given Numan concert, the man front and centre of the stage has ten years on me. Plus, it's the one thing I didn't like about going to concerts even when I was a teenager. So it's not an age thing for me - it's a Vince thing.

As for dancing, I was once persuaded to go to a Dina Caroll concert by/with my brother and his friend, which had a bit of that going on for some numbers.

Least favourite concert EVER.
