I am just registering someone as self employed, a taxi driver with his own vehicle who will be working for one firm. He can choose his own hours so I am satisfied that he's genuinely self employed, but just out of curiosity does this get HMRC excited?
"The blurb says "If you are working for one person or firm only, you may be employed rather than self-employed. If you are unsure, you can check your employment status using the Employment Status Indicator tool by following the link below. Are you working for one person or firm only?"

sorry that I didn't answer this one straight away. I saw it earlier but thought that this looked like one for Kris as I believe that one of the areas that his business concentrates on Taxi Drivers. Unfortunately I've not seen him on the site today John so as I don't actually have any Taxi Driver clients myself I hope that this link to a discussion on this very subject over on Aweb may prove useful :
The facts of the case are not the same but the overall discussion covers matters wider than the initial question.
HTH,
Shaun.

I am more than satisfied he is self employed - own vehicle - choice of when to work - pays all repairs insurance and licencing costs. The question was, even though in this case he is genuinely self employed, is the declaration that he only works for one firm likely to get HMRC excited. It's a rhetorical question, as I have no doubt that they would be content with that status, should they look into it in depth.

Standard practice for taxi drivers to operate as self employed under one taxi firm.
Also standard practice for taxi drivers to rent the vehicle from the taxi firm rather than use their own vehicle so if they are using their own vehicle that's another tick in the self employed status box.
Benefit of working under one firm is that taxi firm are able to provide the hire. The hours worked and even if they decide to take the hire is down to the taxi driver.
Taxi firm makes it money in different ways
1. If driver part time they will usually share the fare less the petrol 50/50 with driver
2. Firm usually has contracts with hospitals/schools/local authority/supermarkets/private businesses who will go to them first for any bookings for which they get an annual fee with the driver keeping the fare.
3. Renting the vehicle and providing servicing/tyres etc to full time drivers.
