HI Again!

Hello everyone, it has been quite some time since I posted on this forum.  My saved booked marked links didn't work, so I have save new ones.  I like the new layout - good to see. When did this all change?

I wanted to let everyone know that nominations are still open until midday on Monday 17th October, 2016 for the IAB UK and International Business and Skill Awards 2016.  (http://www.iabawards.org/) You don't have to be a IAB member to be nominated or to nominate someone.

For members who remember me (!) Things have changed a lot.  I no longer teach taxation. I stopped when the IAB decided there weren't enough candidates taking the exam and no-one else was offering the opportunity to study for the qualification. The book-keepers who were part of my network seem to have become Accountants, so didn't need the network anymore. So I am now using the website (yourlocalbook-keeper.co.uk) to mentor book-keepers and accountants privately. The rest of my time I am just a practicing accountant, and furniture e-retailer!   The furniture business came about to stop me pulling my hair out with my dealing with HMRC......

I will try to find more time to catch with what everyone is doing now but hopefully some of you will reply to help me  wink

Hi Frauke,

good to see you posting again.

I know what you mean about finding solace in other businesses as at times this one can push you right to the edge.

My issues are not with HMRC but with clients hiding bits of information / evidence from me and the eternal chasing for it. I've pondered kidnappinng their children and exchanging them back for invoices, receipts and missing bank statements but not sure how much some of them actually like their children so I might get stuck with them so I've looked seriously at returning to corporate but after a while pondering that one I always realise that I would hate to give up the level of control that I have over my business at the min so I think that you've made the right call with the non related business.

Now what could I sell? Do you reccon that there's much market for ex wives as I've got a stockpile of those. lol.

Talk later Frauke, need to return to beating the soles of this business owners feet with bamboo sticks until he tells me where the rest of his bank statements are (the skills that they don't teach you during qualification!).

All the best,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

Ha ha, things don't change !

I have to admit to emailing a client (sole trader) today, explaining why he can't claim £20 a day or £30 a night for food, instead of keeping receipts, even though others he is working with have been told by their accountants that they can. Fortunately I was able to remind him that I was only able to stop HMRC disallowing his food claims just over 5 years ago when they were randomly checking sole traders returns, because (in addition to other reasons), he had the receipts from all the various locations (with times stamps) to back up the food claims.

How are your clients going to cope with Tax going digital!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
