Hi I'm very new to book keeping having just signed up for the AAT course that will start at the beginning of May. This is a big career change for me so I'm thinking I need to use this opportunity to learn as much as I can and start reading up before the course starts.
I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on suitable books/reading material that would be suitable for a complete beginner? I'm looking forward to the course but also feeling nervous in case I don't grasp the content very well.
Thanks in advance.
I am currently doing AAT at college and we use books published by Osborne books. You can buy these online. I also have another book written by Bill Manyivani which is good . I'd say the difference between the two is that Bill's book is a quick How to guide where as Osborne goes into a bit more detail about Why you do things. If I had to choose one I'd say Osborne while you're learning and Bill's once you're actually using Sage in the workplace.
Hi Sarah
Hows about an intro -we always ask newbies!
I can see you are doing AAT - which level are you up to/what passed/to do and which AQA are you following?
Other usual stuff - do you work in a practice/ firm, planning to be bookkeeper or accountant, how long in role, where based, what you did before this role? That sort of thing. Helps get to know you but also how best to pitch answers to any Qs you pose.
Sounds like you are using sage in the workplace already - what version do you use?
Ive seen Bill's books (isnt it Mantonvani?) although I didnt think he had anything on the newer versions of sage (wasnt it 2016 his last book) and nothing on sage cloudy stuff - or do I have that wrong? His book is a good quick guide. Dummies books are more technical.
Rafal (I know you will read this!) Dont go buying Bill's book - you honestly dont need it, although it might be worth ordering from your library if you still have time to do the work through it before the exam. Have seen your other post on here - will comment in a mo.
Charlotte - Osbourne is a good one to try if you need additional material once you have started your course. Or you may find the college uses it. You can also buy Kaplan books on a standalone basis. BPP too although they are very dry!!!!!
Oh Sarah - you can edit your posts if needed. Also - maybe pop your first name under the signature bar via edit profile - saves us looking up your name each time we respond

Thank you both for your reply. I have started reading through my course material to give me a head start before the course starts in May. I will take a look at your suggestions re: Osborne and Kaplan. Much appreciated
You might find your college uses one or the other, so dont go spending your cash just yet. Gosh May seems so far away though. Hows the reading going? If its going in easily and you are motivated to do it then you might consider distance learning for the next stages.
