Further Study

Hi I am qualified up to old style Level 3, passed just before the change and have been employed as an all round finance assistant for quite a big company with good potential promtion prospects for about 3 years. I currently work part time which is great just now as I have a family but feel ready now to do some more study.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at the Level IV Cert in Management Accunting with the ICB ( I still have my membership) so was wondering about that but I cant appear to find where i can study it, Ive emailed the ICB for more info but if any one has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

As you're employed, and in prime position for all types of experiences I'd personally go for CIMA.

Why CIMA and not ACCA?

Whilst you're a student of the ACCA I'm sure you know you can only go so far as TB and VAT - nothing wrong with that.

If you only plan to be employed whilst training, go for ACCA.

If you don't fancy the above (which is what I'd do) how about AAT?

Level 4 ICB has been mentioned for years, when I completed ICB there was talk of it then! It's probably active now though - I've not checked.

As I say, just my thoughts.

Hi Joanne,

The Management Accounting unit with ICB can be studied as a stand alone unit and is one of four subjects that make up their Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Bookkeeping & Accounting qualification; the other three units being FRS105, Drafting Financial Statements and Corporation Taxation. My college offers the course but you can check with all other providers via the ICB college listings: http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Study--Qualifications/Bookkeeping-Courses

Good luck smile

Hi thanks for replying, I was wondering about CIMA but i was a wee bit put off in that I would have to be a member before I could see if I was eligible for any exemptions plus I think it could be expensive but that will be true of any course.

Hi,

Yes expensive but in an academic sense you'd be extremely qualified.

In business, as an oppose to practice (I'm sure someone will prove me wrong) those who reach the higher, better paid jobs are Chartered.

If you're going to aim for something go for the one at the top.

Ok yeah you are right. Just need to bite the bullet really and get started! Was also mulling over the idea of getting my payroll diploma and then slowly start trying to work for myself but I'm very unsure about that and I think given the lack of time I have my efforts might be put to better use if I do further study . Thanks so much for replying ð

Hi I have the old ICB level 3 plus the self assessment/payroll modules. With which I have been working under their practice license as a self employed bookkeeper. I did consider the level 4, but they were amending the course and I didn't get much response when I was emailing them. I didn't have much confidence in the responses I was getting tbh. I cannot do ACCA due to the restriction of self employment (while studying you can only work to tb even if you are under a different practice licence). So I decided to go down the AAT route. I started on level 3 and have found most of level 3 very easy as it recovers a lot from ICB and what I have learnt from the wonderful people one here! Planning on going down the tax route and do ATT next and possibly CTA. CIMA is also an option. Thanks Lyndsey

If you were to study CIMA you wouldn't be restricted in what you can do ourside of work either - like tax work. Obviously you couldn't mention you were studying towards to clients. It's a good choice to make.
