question to admin- why enter button does not work when we write messages ?
Permalink Closed

Hi Usually, to make things clearer in my messages I use enter button to move parts of text to next line or sth so that my message is easier to read for people. Why enter button doesn't have effect on my text anymore ? I made spaces while preparing message but after I save it , all the lines are together and text is very difficult to read. Why does that happen ?

Are you posting on a mobile phone?   Thats usually the reason!

Oh - now that is very strange. Ive not had a problem from mine, nor my ipad. In fact I havent seen a prob from my phone but do know others who have.

Might be worth going back in and seeing if you can edit it to add blank lines? Might be just a blip.

Unless someone else has noticed it - wait for them to all shout out now!

I think the most likely cause of this is that you are using the 'Quick Reply' form and accidentally hitting tab before pressing enter/return. In the 'quick reply' version of the page, tab moves the 'cursor' from the text field in which you are typing your comment to the button that posts your message. When that button has the cursor, pressing enter or return will post the message.

If you switch to the advanced editor, hitting tab takes you to the button that shows a preview of your post - which means it doesn't get submitted when you hit return; instead the preview appears (or is updated).

Another possibility, given that you are using a laptop, is a touchpad 'tap to click' issue. It could be that your pointer just happens to be over the submit button, and as you move your hand to hit enter, you are accidentally registering a click on the touchpad. I always turn off tap to click (and 'touch zones' and other such nonsense) because I consider it stupid and annoying* - however, while it's a possible cause in this case, I suspect it's unlikely, unless you are consistently putting the mouse pointer over the submit button.

* I know some people get on fine with it - or at least think they do, until they discover they've accidentally done things they didn't realise until much later.

Works for me fine

Rafal, just a suggestion, but why not type it out in wordpad or something similar and then paste it in to the forum page?  Check to see if it's a tabbing or cursor issue first but if not I suspect it's a function set wrong that's saying enter means submit.

thanks for reply I tried to use enter function to go from one line to another today. Looks like I still can't do it. While I am writing post I can see that after I press enter button cursor goes one line lower. Unfortunately, when I click submit it is not saved with space on main forum page. It is saved without space.

Pretty sure that the issue is peculiar to your laptop Rafal.

Out of interest, what browser are you using?

Is it in quick reply or advanced editor?

kindest regards,

Shaun.

Interestingly Ive just had a post lose all the paragraph formatting. This happened when I got the message 'you have just posted a comment', the one when its tell you that you need to wait a minute (BKN doesnt like fast typists!). It clumped everything together before I was then able to press submit on the question. I ddi hope it would re-format when it posted, but it didnt so I had to go in and manually change it!

Not sure if this mightve impacted for Rafal, as I dont know if you posted two questions within seconds of each other when this happened the other week?

thanks for reply Joanne

Few days ago I sent message on forum and suprisingly my enter button started working properly. I wonder if this is still like that today.

I hope it is.

For some reason Shaun it started working properly now. I don't know why. I didn't change any settings on my laptop etc.
