Registered or Not?

Hi All.

Can anyone tell me what the Pros and Cons are of being registered with a body like AAT for bookkeeping against not being registered with anyone and just going it alone?  I aim to start up as a self employed Bookkeeper shortly and would like to know if it is advantageous to be registered or not.  Thanks all.

Hi Fiona
So hows about a bit more flesh on the bones of an intro before we start. We always ask newbies!

Do you already belong to the AAT as a student? Have you taken any of their exams and what level are you up to/intending to complete/what kind of services are you intending to supply as a bookkeeper - as in are you planning to stop at Trial Balance or actually go into the Accountancy territory and produce Accounts and Tax returns? Do you have any other prof qualifications and if so -what exams passed/with what body/in midst of doing, also a few other things on a personal level where based, what you did before this role? That so of thing. Helps get to know you but also how best to pitch answers.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

Sorry Fiona
Just actually looked at your profile - which mightve helped in the first place. Welcome to the forum.

I assume you are taling about becoming a Member in Practice (MIP)

Quick one, as busy.

Pros - technical support
- provision of certain legal documentation for use when dealing with clients
- MLR fees covered
- CPD assistance given
- helps gain work from Accountants/recognition of having reached that standard (NB YOU cannot refer to the AAT in any way in advertising, so not on businesscards, website - nada - unless you are a MAAT MIP) can carry weight with other finance professionals (the public dont give a damn most of the time, but thats because they dont know the difference!)

Cons - you might view the membership cost as a con. Most dont.
