Looking for good software/DVD's to learn and practice bookkeeping.
Permalink Closed

Hey everyone, I'm currently looking for a good software/DVD so that I can learn not only the principles of bookkeeping, but also where I can practice some exercises over and over again so that I'm well prepared for the real world. And all from the comfort of my own home.  Anyone have any good products they can recommend? Thanks.

You need to introduce yourself to give us some idea what level of software / study material would be best for you.

Do you have any experience in this field? What are your intentions / expectations? are you looking to become qualified? Do you want to become self employed or work in someone elses practice.

kindest regards,

Shaun.

I'm looking to do the AAT at some point and do some bookkeeping work for an employer at some point in the future.

ok. you need to think this through much more.

Why would someone employ you to do bookkeeping?

You're not a school leaver so it's not your first job. How would your existing roles convince an employer to take you on for this line of work? If you can't think of an answer to that then the reality is that you need to put yourself through the training to give yourself a chance (there is no guarantee) of a potential employer taking interest in employing your services.

You have identified the right qualification in AAT. It will take you around two years to complete the course... Possibly a little longer if you are completely new to this or a little less if you are a natural (there are a few people for whom accounting just makes sense... Many of them are regular contributors on here).

If you are trying to decide if this career path is for you then a good start point are these three books :

www.amazon.co.uk/Business-Accounts-Accounting-Finance-David/dp/1905777922/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1

www.amazon.co.uk/AAT-Units-Foundation-Course-Companion/dp/0751728926/ref=sr_1_1

www.amazon.co.uk/AAT-Units-Foundation-Revision-Companion/dp/0751746320/ref=sr_1_3

Lots of questions in them to do yourself. Once you can do the last nbook cover to cover do the AAT skills test in order to start your studies at level III. If you fail the skills test then you couldn't really do the book.

There's nothing to fear in those. all very simple and straight foreards. The nightmare studies come later when you start getting into taxation (which even as a bookkeeper you will need to know a lot about).

Doing those three books will either tell you that this career path is for you or save you a fortune in training courses when you realise how much there is to it and how complex it is.

all the best,

Shaun.

p.s. I was expecting much more information to go on than a quick one line response.

Hi Christopher
As Shaun says its a bit hard to give advice when you give nothing away. If you are planning to do AAT 'at some point' - what is stopping you from doing it now? Just go for it, unless you dont think the subject will suit you. Training companies will provide suitable videos/lectures and access to the necessary equipment. Be careful of buying DVDs/learning media that suggest they will teach you to become a bookkeeper and in fact will not - come back on here for advice if you are unsure. Although as Shaun says - we usually need a wee bit more info.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

I can see you have logged back in, but unfortunately you have not managed to say thank you to Shaun for the trouble he went to in answering your question and providing the links to such good training material. It's not a good start if you want to get more help from the regular contributors on here. Manners cost nothing and a thank you takes milliseconds.
