ICB vs AAT
Permalink Closed

Hi I have just started level 2 bookkeeping ICB. I was having a look at local jobs advertised and 90% of them ask for AAt qualification.  Does ICB not count? Have I just wasted my money? TIA

No, you've not wasted your money as anything that teaches you anything is worth doing.

At the base level all qualifications are pretty similar (AAT, ICB, IAB). but after the initial papers they start to go their own ways. As you note, most advertised positions will want AAT as accountants recognise that (many of them started there) and they will not consider the others for permanent roles... For self employed roles I would say that experience counts more than the bit of paper that you hold.

Whilst your ICB qualification will not be recognised for exemptions (it is not an NQF recognised qualification) it should give you the knowledge to pass the AAT skills test which will enable you to start AAT at level III rather than level II.

so... never look at these things as being a waste of money. Just a different way of getting to where you want to be.

HTH and good luck with your studies.

kindest regards,

Shaun.

Depends on what you want out of life - you dont say and there isnt much info in your intro. I say - finish the course now youve paid for it, then switch to AAT.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

AAT then hands down, will help you get work from others. You can do their level 3 bookkeeping qual if you dont want to do the full four Accounting Tech level.
