Is there a flat rate overnight expense for self employed
Permalink Closed

Hi,

Is there a flat rate that be claimed for a self employed subcontractor working in Gibraltar for a UK registered business?

I have seen something regards Incidental Overnight Expenses however it looked like it was aimed at the employed.

TIA

Hi Toni

There isn't a flat rate, but the self employed can claim for overnight accommodation and also for meals that are outside of their normal pattern of work, so evening meal and breakfast can be claimed for.  Receipts are required to back up any claims. This applies abroad as well.

That is the problem, he hasn't kept them but Deduction Statements prove he was he was away on the dates claiming.
Any suggestions what to do would be great please.

Thanks

At least a couple of people on here will say no receipt no claim and that is, strictly speaking, correct.  Did he use his debit or credit card to pay for meals?  If so, you could match up payments where you're sure these are legitimate.  I would do that myself, but that has to be your call.  If you do, I would suggest you advise your client that  it could be contested by HMRC.

Hi Toni
If cash was paid and no receipts retained how will you know what to put through? Or are you going to take the chance of an HMRC inspection (and potential fines etc) to put through the Limited company employee equivalent? I would say that this is a great way of teaching your client what they need to do next time they are away on work related trips by saying you can put nothing through this time - amazing how such focusses the mind.

All - wasnt there another thread on similar lines about hotel rates abroad recently? I cannot it see it just now - can anyone add the link for me please?
