Hehe - mine's a little tidier (and a little less in quantity) than that; a clear plastic A4 envelope of stuff, along with a bunch of email attachments.

The flip side of that, though, is that I have to use Xero.

The more I use it, the less I like it. I'm starting to think its name is a reflection of how good it is on a scale of 'xero' to ten.

I've never had one that bad, yet!   Thought you would have your feet up watching the womens world cup final Doug.  India heading for a win if they don't mess it up

Lol Doug - but you love it dont you. Just imagining your lounge now carpetted with them all. Im loving the box - clearly a favourite given the tape on it and the fact that the lod is half eaten.  biggrin

I know one Accountant who just will not deal with clients who have such receipts - Ive said pass them my way. Great deal of satisfaction in sorting them (well there is sometimes!!)

Sunday work  for me - very little. Just spent 3 hours with my boy!! Lovely!!

Who said they were a clients this is my filing system!!!

No seriously I do enjoy going through the receipts but even these were a bit too screwed up for my liking but I did find 6p in the box which I am not sure whether to declare or not, not sure how I stand with MLR on this issue?

Definitely report it Doug, that's a bribe if ever I saw one.  It might only be 6p this year, but it could be 8p next year!!

Yep, an amazing finish, how India blew it from there I'll never know but fair play to England, they got the wickets when it counted.

I only have one messy client like that, normally a carrier bag! I have got rid of all the rest of them.

Used to do loads of them years ago and took the decision to gradually get rid of them as I don't really like doing them.

I had my worst one so far, recently. The receipts were in a zipper wallet all screwed up, almost into balls. Took me a day just to unscrew and sort them. Think I got the message through when I explained that many of them were so screwed up I could no longer read them! Hopefully next year's will be in a better state. ð Debbie

Many years ago I had quite a lot of clients like that, but have managed to train most of them.

My worst experience is with a new client, a farmer, who appeared in our office with a cardboard box of paperwork.

He had previously advised that his paperwork was impeccable. It arrived sealed and looked extremely clean and tidy.

However, a week or so later when I opened the box I was not too happy with the diesel stained invoices, or oily spanners I found at the bottom.

I actually wore gloves to sort them, and disposed of my keyboard once his accounts were complete.

That was the first client that I ( nervously)  advised we were not prepared to act for again.

While I don't actually mind sorting through messes of receipts like that I do find it pretty disrespectful, especially one in particular of mine who gives me essentially what they use as a bin (it includes old chocolate bar wrappers, pen lids, cigarettes etc) with their paperwork all screwed up in it.
Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of dumping people like that because I'm not self employed!! Nothing seems to change even when they find out our fees are based on TIME taken sorting out the mess, before being able to even start the bookkeeping...

"While I don't actually mind sorting through messes of receipts like that"

Ditto - but...

"I do find it pretty disrespectful, especially one in particular of mine who gives me essentially what they use as a bin (it includes old chocolate bar wrappers, pen lids, cigarettes etc) with their paperwork all screwed up in it."

Disrespectful, in that case, is a massive understatement. That's just taking the piddle.

I would have been inclined to hand it back - probably making a point by putting it inside a bigger box with hazard/health warnings plastered over it - and explain to them that I was not willing to touch it in that state, and that they have to give it to me with the bonus detritus and general 'disgustingness' eliminated.

But then, people who know me (including my clients) mostly know that I can be very blunt and to the point - and often sweary with it - and I don't care who the recipient is. (But I also tend to temper it with my sense of humour, which is why the bigger box would be used).

"Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of dumping people like that because I'm not self employed!!"

In which case, you have a boss, and you should raise the issue with them if it happens again. What you described is completely unacceptable, whether self employed or employed.

Mine tend to come in foolscap boxes rather than shoe boxes but its the same principle.

I'll have money on it that at least 10% of the receipts in that box are for a different tax year to the one that you are working on!

When wallpapering the front room floor based on months and day sequence within month I've missed a few myself before (on first pass) where the year is completely out.

Of course, all sort of other receipts get thrown in there by accident (yer right!). Biggest laugh that I've had to date was a receipt for 50 shades of grey DVD and a pair of handcuffs.... Now, how do you argue that one to HMRC as being wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the business!!!!!

Utterly and totally agree.  I don't mind receipts in shoeboxes or whatever, but if it's got stuff in like Faye describes then it would be straight before the boss.  If it was one of my clients, it would be returned post haste, with an explanation why.

It has been brought up several times, believe me - I think it's just become more of a joke now of "what will they bring in next" to be honest!

Oh do tell Faye, what else have you seen?  I was given a receipt for 50 condoms once.

How did you account for these?

Was it a current asset or a long term liability??

My best one was bill's to a lap dancing bar. Think that doesn't meet the wholly and exclusively order ð
