I had a question from a family member, just wondering if anyone has any experience with this?
She moved out to Australia over 15 years ago. She has just collected a small private pension, some tax free some not. The bit that was taxed was around £11,000. Is this tax reclaimable at all?
I will do a bit more research when I get home, just thought I would pop it on here to see if anyone has experience with this.
Hi Lyndsey Same tax rules for expats - any income drawn from UK sources (pensions, property income, bank interest etc) remains liable for UK income tax.
They may also be taxed in Australia on the income.
Australia has a double taxation treaty with the UK. I dont know the finer details as I am only just (possibly) starting on that country myself but for a Limited. But depending on the agreement itself you should get either a full refund or partial refund. There are forms to be completed to send to HMRC - great care needed when completing and its not a particularly rapid process.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
