I have a new client that runs an art gallery. There are receipts for costs for a private viewing in this month's pack including wine. Normally I would put it straight under entertainment but I was wondering if it would be allowable given that it is normal for a gallery to have a private view at the start of an exhibition. Could it be an advertising cost? I think the answer is no but thought I'd ask for other opinions.
Its a common thing to serve wine/champers and nibbles at such an event but the driver is that it they can hold an event without offering such and still make sales. Just seen a good example of - painting a wall blue for an exhibition - such is also disallowed, because a white wall would not prevent them from conducting their business - ie not W&E!
There are some new tax relief rules or at the very least a consultation (not sure where they are up to) for museums and galleries, not sure if your client will qualify - worth a look in the deeper recesses of HMRC

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
Thanks. I will put it in entertainment for now. I don't do the final accounts so I will point it out to the accountant and they can move it if it's appropriate.

Hi, this seems only for Charities but might be worth a look
