Moneysoft Payroll Manager Update and McAfee.

If you have McAfee installed as your Virus software then please be aware that it is not compatible with the latest Moneysoft update, as I have found out this morning !

Basically, if you run the update, it will uninstall the Moneysoft programme ( not your files)  but be unable to reinstall it.

Moneysoft are unable to assist.  If I can find a way to resolve this I advise.

July 2017 McAfee Blocking Update / access to Payroll Manager
A number of our users have recently reported problems when trying to run the latest Payroll Manager update. In addition to this, in some cases, the Payroll Manager desktop icon also fails to work following an attempted update. In each of these cases the user has reported that they have McAfee Antivirus software installed on their computer.

It would appear that a recent update to some versions of McAfee Antivirus is now causing their software to block the download and successful installation of the Payroll Manager update. As a result, Windows may produce error messages such as System error 183. Cannot create file when that file already exists (or similar) during the attempted installation process.

Remedy
Unfortunately (for obvious reasons) Moneysoft is not able to override your McAfee Antivirus settings in any way, and you should contact McAfee for further advice on this issue, however it is worth following the steps below first to see if this gets round the problem.

Check the settings in your McAfee security software to see if it blocking or quarantining our software (Moneysoft is not able to provide support on how to do this).
Shut down and restart your computer
Uninstall Payroll Manager (from the Control Panel of your computer) Note: This does not remove your Payroll data files, which are stored separately.
Reinstall Payroll Manager from the Downloads page of our website (choose the option marked Full Download)
If you are still having problems after following the above steps then you should contact McAfee for further advice. They may suggest that you update your version of McAfee.

We would encourage you to report this issue to McAfee so that they can update their antivirus software to stop you having similar problems in the future Contact McAffee Support and report a false positive

Looks like this has been onoging for a month or two - not sure if this will help or hinder as there are some tips in here. Mentions also that folk with Kaspersky have an issue as well......

When I ran a payroll software supplier I loathed Antivirus companies with a vengeance. Every few months one or other of them would start reporting false positives with our downloads and keep on doing so until their next update. Depressingly often this would lead to a blistering email from the user who would accuse us of harbouring viruses in our download (this was never once true, but I suppose it was an understandable reaction from users being told by a respected global corporation that our software had a virus). There is a website which tests downloads against about 50 AV programs so we were able to show users that the other 49 AV programs were reporting our file as "clean".

The worst repeat offenders for this behaviour, by far, were McAfee and Norton (Symantec). I recall that for a while one release of Norton also blocked our clients' attempts to file RTI messages! But plenty of others messed up updates to "incriminate" our software at least once, including Sophos and AVG.

The AV companies never took any responsibility for the damage caused by their false positives, and we never had a single apology or acknowledgement of our loss. They would just silently repair their next update (though in this case it looks as if McAfee hasn't even done that for Moneysoft).

Not using either, I don't know what options you have - but a couple of things you could look for:

1) Does McAfee offer an exceptions list - files/folders/programs that you can tell it not to check? If so, you could try adding Moneysoft's executables to it (the updated might be a separate one to the main program). And/or possibly the directory in program files in which Moneysoft is installed.

2) Does it offer an option to temporarily disable protection? If so, you could do that to update Moneysoft, and then enable protection again.

There are downsides to both, unfortunately, #1 being the worst.

Note: Make sure you have System Restore enabled (it should be by default), and if you try either of the above and it goes pear shaped, use system restore to go back to before that point. You should find it in Control Panel under "Recovery" IIRC.

(Similarly, if the clash has caused Moneysoft to stop working or be uninstalled, it should be possible to us e System Restore to go back to before the update.)

Thank you all for the responses.

 

Vince, once again you have resolved my IT issues.

Despite a long web chat with Mcafee, I was left no wiser.

I temporary turned off the firewall.

I was then able to install the latest version of Moneysoft, and had it running within a few minutes.

I turned the firewall back on, and all is still working well.

I had this problem and wish I'd come to this site for help first. Just spent all morning tallking to Mcafee who passed me to BT whereby I was told to uninstall Mcfaee then install it again ( which took ages and didn't solve the problem) .

Just read the above post from Moneysoft, uninstalled their program , installed it again (took 5 minutes) , problem solved!

I might also add just used Moneysoft for a clients AE ...... absolute breeze!

I assumed that McAfee would have resolved last months problem with Moneysoft when I updated again this morning............. but no -  slightly different problem but still had to uninstall etc.

I used Vince's guidance again ( thanks)  and its now installed ok.

I had to uninstall Moneysoft and reinstall from their website again last month. Just seen another new update for 1st October and still have the same problem. Guess every time Moneysoft has a new update I'll have to do this.

It's no good saying call McCafee ...has anyone tried it?.. I did , 2 hours later and being transferred to every department they have (including the janitors cupboard ) I'm was still no further forward

The obvious answer is to get rid of McAfee and install AVG.  They do a free and a paid for version.  Best AV software by a mile in my opinion.

 My thoughts exactly. Try Avast if you dont like AVG.

Although I think a strongly worded email needs to go to McAfee given this has been going on for months to quite a few peeps (not just on here) and tell them to stop blaming Moneysoft when it appears to be McAfee at fault.

Well once again McAfee messed up our latest Moneysoft update. Although we can get it working if we turn off the firewall before downloading the update, this is not what I expect for the licence fees for our network.

So it was uninstalled and replaced by Bitdefender.

We're in the same boat, but what is even more infuriating is that all 50 providers report our software as clean using the comprehensive web checking - including the provider that was flagging a problem in the first place!!! It seems some providers use a "reputational" approach to flagging as a potential virus threat. In other words, if sufficient users haven't tagged the software as "safe", they report it as suspicious without even running a check on the file. If they actually check the file they report it as clean. So, for a small software company like ours, each new release is pretty much guaranteed to be reported as suspicious (even though actual virus checks of the files reveal them to be clean) and we have to apply for each release to be "white-listed" (i.e. ask them to check the file and mark it as virus free in their updates) before we bring it to market. I suspect that, even if our entire customer base was to report our software as "safe" it wouldn't create a big enough "reputation" to stop the reputational AV products from quarantining it! Grrr.

Couldn't access my Money Manager files after trying to update.  Solved the problem by running System Restore to an earlier date.  The first time I opened it after this it asked if I wanted update, so I clicked on NO!!  It's working fine now, but I'm not sure if this would work for the Payroll version as I only have Money Manager.

 When you say wanted update - which software was trying to update? Do you mean your Money Manager programme?

Ah right, thank you for the update.

The only issue with that, which you wouldnt necessarily know if you dont do payroll, is that payroll software needs to be constantly updated to remain current on paye/tax etc changes. So such is not advisable at all (just for anyone else reading the thread who may yet still wander in!)

Its less of an issue with accounting software generally speaking, but is software dependent and the MM may become unstable at some point (worth checking with your provider).

The key is to bombard McAfee with the problems and to stop them wholesale denying it is their software that is an issue.

Welcome to the forum.

So hows about an intro before we go any further. We always ask newbies! You could start a new thread to say hi or just add it to this one.

Usual stuff - what prof body do you belong to, do you work for yourself or in a practice/ firm, are you a bookkeeper or accountant, what qualifications, how long in role, where up to in your studies-what exams passed/with what body/in midst of doing, where based, what you did before this role? That sort of thing. Helps get to know you but also how best to pitch answers.

In reply to your questions, I don't belong to any professional body. I am a 73 years old, and the only training I had was way back in the 60's in a small office where I learnt book keeping and wages, all on a manual system then. The work involved banking, analysis, petty cash, bought & sales ledger, typing of invoices, estimates, letters etc., and the books were balanced at the end of every month and then sent to head office. We had an AddoX adding machine - you had to pull the handle after every entry! I left the company after 6 years to start a family. I went back to the same company in 1980 by which time Head Office had purchased an Advanced Data Processing Machine and we had to assign codes to the various categories, and then send them to Head Office. By 1982 my husband (a typewriter and photocopier engineer) started an office machines shop and I worked there for approx. 2 years, after which he closed. Needing to gain more experience of the electronic machines he returned to his former employer. After that I worked part time in another small office, still on a manual system, but they had just purchased a computer and were getting to grips with it.

I purchased my first computer 1994/5 when it was DOS and windows 3.1. I loved it and was always buying computer magazines, trying out all the free programmes etc.
If any of the free programmes messed the computer up, all you had to do was go into DOS, type format c: and that would wipe the whole drive very quickly and you could reload the floppy discs and start again!

In 1995 learnt the Money Manager DOS version in another office, also quite a few other programmes. Now I'm retired I have been helping to set up and teach the Money Manager programme on an informal basis for a local playgroup.
