Help - Sorry not bookkeeping, screen issues since update tonight!

Hi everyone and especially anyone who is techy!

Every evening about 5.30pm my computer is set to do updates and anti-virus stuff etc, whilst I'm cooking dinner.  Anyway tonight about 6.15 I was on the internet on the ikea website and suddenly the screen went blank/black, it came back on within seconds but in a different resolution.  I have looked at the resolution but it is on the recommended one and changed it to all the others but still to no avail.

So the question is what do I do next?

Do I system restore or will that mess up my other programmes like Quickbooks and 12 pay.  I did 2 lots of payroll yesterday, will these be affected?

Sorry I am just not a techy person and the resolution is really bad and needs going back to normal.

Is it an update that has affected it?  I am assuming so.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Amanda

Sounds very much like a graphics card problem, but don't quote me.  Programs/files should be unaffected, but presumably you can check yesterdays payrolls, even in the wrong resolution?

System restore won't mess it up, apart from any new programs or updates post the restore.  Files won't be affected so payroll and quickbooks will be where you last did up to.

Hi John,

Yes apparently it is a graphics card up but can't seem to find how to just remove that one. I have been on Dell website with the tag number just in case there is anything on there but can't find anything.

Ideally I would rather just un install the update if poss as oppose to systems restore.

God I hate it when it goes wrong and I have a busy day today.

So how do I find the new update and un install it?

The timing - so soon after your computer does updates - does very much sound like an issue with an update; perhaps the driver for the graphics card and one of the updates aren't getting along too well.

TBH, System Restore, as John suggested, is probably the easiest option. It's not (or shouldn't be) a major thing: Hopefully, your computer will have created a restore point immediately before the update - so you just have to go into System Restore and look for one dated 23rd November. If there isn't one, then go for the one with the most recent date before that.

The problem then is that there's a good chance the update will get installed again, and you'll encounter the same problem again. You might be able to avoid that by manually updating, and checking the description of each update. If one looks like it has anything to do with graphics/screen or similar, don't let that update run. However, that depends on which version of Windows you have (you didn't say) - and even then, it's probably a bit of an arduous task for someone non-technical. You might be better off finding someone local to look at it for you. (Or do you have any IT literate relatives?)

Edit: Before even thinking about that, though, in the graphics properties thing where you set the resolution, double check that it's correctly recognising your screen - the update may have confused a setting; if it thinks your screen is a different one to what it actually is, the resolution it offers/defaults to as "ideal" might not actually be the ideal one for the screen.

Similarly, it might be worth unplugging the monitor lead (both ends) and re-inserting it firmly. The timing makes it unlikely that it could be the lead, but it's always worth a try - coincidences DO happen sometimes.

Hi Amanda

I agree with Vince, a system restore would be easier.

It depends which windows you're on as to how to uninstall an update but on W10 type updates in the bottom left hand search bar, click on view your update history, click on uninstall updates, select the individual update you want to uninstall, then right click and uninstall.  W7 click on the windows icon (bottom left) and type in view installed updates and select the one you want, right click and uninstall.

John I can't see an update that actually happened yesterday so a bit confusing as to what exactly happened!

Vince - it is Windows 10 i think....

Vince - There is a local guy and I will probably drop it round there tomorrow to be sorted as I really have no idea what I am doing, and they are really good at this sort of thing!

Very quick one mid meeting - its not the 'zoom' option that youve pressed by mistake rather than resolution is it? Little three dots top right of your thingy bar (chrome/firefox/t'internet explorer) then zoom half way down - set to 100%.

Thingy - technical term.

Oops - yeah sorry, browser. Gawd my memory is soooo bad!

HI Joanne,

No worries, I must admit I didn't try it my son did it for me!

Well it's going to my computer guy tomorrow to be sorted as recently I have had far too many IT probs, so I have taken the plunge tonight, after talking to my son who is very techy, and decided it was time to upgrade my crappy PC and old laptop! So because it was black friday I have bought a new laptop! Hopefully once I have got all of my stuff over on to it, I can start running my business as oppose to sorting out my bloody PC all the time.

So hoping that they will fix my old PC in a few hours as oppose to leaving it with them, that way I can catch up on work I was suppose to do today!

I can still use it but the screen hurts the eyes after a while as it is too stretched.

Hi Everyone,

Update on the old PC..... the graphics card was so old (original one), that it didn't like the new update, hence changing everything.

So new graphics card today (whatever that is), and it's now back home safe and sound!

Mind you glad I am upgrading it with a new laptop!
