Hi - I have a client who had an employee who recently left his business. My client hasn't told me that he has employed anyone else but I can see, from the paperwork that he drops off with me, that another person is working there. When I mentioned this to him, he did say that he had someone helping him out but that he was "sorting out" their wages and that they weren't going to go on the payroll. I am now wondering if this is a situation that I need to follow up? Any advice would be helpful.
I have just done some online research and I can see that I need to report the client to HMRC if they are paying cash in hand without declaring it, so I will endeavour to get to the bottom of what is going on - maybe the additional help is a family member or something so I don't want to jump to conclusions - I will message my client and ask for more information. Any advice would still be great from anyone with experience of a similar situation.
