Xero Payroll Journal
Permalink Closed

Hi all :)

I'm after some advice on posting payroll journals on Xero. Normally, I have no problem with this at all but I've got myself all confused this time!

The issue I've got is to do with SSP. I just can't seem to get these journals right! I've attached copies of Nov & Dec payroll summaries. I don't know how to post these journals on Xero due to the fact that a SSP lump sum has been paid in December (also attached) which obviously needs posting as a DR somewhere and the fact that December's payroll journal doesn't actually balance.

Any advice on how to post these journals would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

Jon

PS - Looking forward to contributing to the forum :)

Hi Jon
General forum suggestion - this is not really a zero smeero question, its more a general bookkeeping Q. By adding the software (in this instance) it will prevent others from reading and therefore responding.

We always encourage folk to have a go at answering - so perhaps list your journals (even if at this stage they dont balance), then someone can answer quickly. (Silly season and all that as well as better for learning!)

Hi Jon

Are you sure its SSP and not SMP?  Sick pay is down to the employer to pay, and there's no rebate back from HMRC.  As you've had an advance payment I assume it must be SMP?

As Joanne says, post your journal and we can hopefully help point out the area you need to look at.

Thanks for the replies folks :)

I'll post it in the general bookkeeping forum.

John.... oops, yes I meant to type SMP!

Here's the journal I posted for November.

The bottom two entries are described as "SMP Recover/Compensation" on Xero. I think it would probably be a good idea to create a new account though for this rather than use 479 & 826.

Hope I haven't messed it up too much and look daft

Quick one for now - need to get a bigger version of the first pics (am an old bird - eyesight going). Also - can you answer the Qs on the intro post as then we wont either talk down or talk up to you!)

Re this one given we dont use zero smeero, although I can guess - can you confirm the 826 copde is bal sheet and 479 is P&L

Larger files uploaded.

The bank one is just confirmation of HMRC payment of £3929.16 in December.

Hi Jon
Sorry - keep being interrupted.

The SMP funding has been advanced to the company I presume.  So how much was advanced at the start of the tax year and where in the balance sheet is that 'loan' showing?

No worries at all. I'm sitting here studying anyway :)

The SMP funding was paid in December (£3929.16). I haven't done the books for December yet so not posted. If I'm honest, I'm not sure where to post it to.

(I believe the baby was due in Jan 18 so this was the date on the SMP application for but the birth was premature).

Ok. So that Bank screen shot you showed before was the entirity of the SMP funding? Can see the images now as typing! What was the total SMP funding claim made via the payroll software and what date was that made? Any posting in the software at the time of the claim? So was the first payment of SMP to the individual in November?

Might be asking you to post earlier payroll reports so can start form the beginning but will see what the answers to the above are.

I'm currently having a chat with the lady who does the payroll. She's going to get back to me with some more information.

I'll let you know when I've got it.

In the meantime, thanks for your help so far :)
