Evening All,
Today i had received an email from an employee wanting to know why she had had PAYE deducted when she hadn't yet earned £11500. I checked my calculations which were correct and sent a response. My question really is when faced with a situation like this, when responding just exactly how much detail do you go into with regards to how PAYE and even NI contributions are calculated. The reason I ask is not a lot of people understand the calculations so is it worth giving a in depth explanation of how you have arrived at the figures deducted.
I don't do payroll, so this is non-specific, but I like to go into detail and explain everything that's relevant.
999 times out of 1,000 the person who asked doesn't read everything I wrote, but that's *their* problem, not mine - and when they subsequently ask something I've included in that explanation, I tend to say something to the effect of "this is the answer, which I did explain when I replied to you on ..."
If I'm in a bad mood, I just point back to the original explanation and say "I've already told you."

And I thought only women had "bad moods".
So in essence it is better to waffle on and cover all areas even if the information goes over the recipients head.
I wouldn't respond to the employee. You are not employed by them. Get them to route their query through the employer. If they cannot answer, then you can correspond with them but I would be including a link to HMRC or some such, or direct them to phone HMRC if they still don't understand it. It's not rocket science in this case.

I almost posted a link to the HMRC paye calculator to back up the figure deducted but then decided against it. Employees quite often email me with tax queries instead of the employer. Im sure the employers just point them in my direction.
On here you're extremely kind with the amount of help you give. However I think all of your clients do as you say or else ð€
Somewhere up North there's a hill with the last clients that didn't do as Joanne told them...

I showed it to one of my clients - he had several retorts, which I cannot recall word for word, but they were flippin hilarious too whilst agreeing with your sentiments.
I think some folk like that I get the whip out!!!
