Hello everyone, I have recently become a self-employed Book Keeper, passing my Level 2 AAT in Book Keeping, currently studying the Advanced Level 3 Diploma. New clients keep asking if I have Payroll experience which I currently do not and the AAT Book Keeping course does not teach you this. So I am considering a Payroll course but I am not sure which course I should proceed with, there seems to be 'generic' Payroll courses and then more specific courses like Sage 50 Payroll, please could you provide me with your advice on which course would be better suited to someone like myself you has just started, thank you kindly.
Sage 50 payroll is software training rather than payroll persé.
CIPP is the one to look at, payroll and employment law can be a minefield. Why not just outsource and get it done on a white label basis (some on here do it)

Sorry to laugh but I literally just read your reply and it went straight over my head...
"Who is your practice licence or MLR with", I have no idea what this means or CIPP or white label basis.
In my bio I have said I am new to this, so sorry if I don't quite understand your reply, however thank you so much for replying, even though I have no idea what you said
However I can answer one question, I am based in North Dorset.
I will be visiting North Dorset soon, nice neck of the woods!!
Firstly please add your first name so that it pops up under the signature line of your posts, saves everyone looking it up each time. (Via edit, profile, signature section)
Secondly the AAT have very strict rules to follow.
They don't allow anyone to be a bookkeeper or Accountant using their name without a practice licence.....to get that you need to have passed certain exams sufficient to prove to them that you know what you are doing and have some experience.
As part of the practice licence they will cover you for your Money Laundering (MLR, or also referred to by some a AML) registration requirements.
It is illegal not to be covered for MLR and failure to do so can result in a very large fine and a very very long time in prison.
If you do not have a practice licence with them then you need to be covered by HMRC for money laundering.
If you have even just one client and no MLR registration, then stop what you are doing and get the registration sorted. Seriously. As mentioned above fines and prison will follow if not, plus expulsion from the AAT so the exams will have gone to waste.
Also ....do you have insurance cover? If not, get that now before you do anything else as well, or you will lose your house when a client sues, and believe me they will sue!!!
What was it you did before this lark?
Edited to correct typos
PS if you want any links from the AAT showing you the licence information or the learning modules etc for MLR then let us know and we can include it here.

I agree with Joanne please check out the AAT requirements a practice licence is very much required. All accountancy must follow the MLR Regulations and register there services. If you have a membership whether AAT/IAB/ICB they all offer this within their practice agreement - a link for further information www.gov.uk/guidance/money-laundering-regulations-accountancy-service-provider-registration
You will also need to register with Data Protection as you will be a holder of personal records and definitely insurance.
Payroll - CIPP is Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals - link for further information www.cipp.org.uk/
Having said that I am an accounts Tutor as well as run my own bookkeeping and payroll practice. and live in Ringwood which is very close/Dorset border - I offer Sage bespoke training and day courses - I also sell the Sage online courses which include Skillsfirst and the Sage Certification. Please feel free to drop me a line if you would like further information on this. I am also a tutor with ICB through Oxbrige Home Learning which also cover payroll as well as accounts.
Joanne - if you are passing Ringwood we have very nice coffee shops or I can take a little drive to meet !!
Good luck with it all Bee it is very daunting when you see all the requirements (forgot the licence to have Sage desktop version)

Thank you so much for your messages, I can not begin to tell you how helpful you have been.
So, now I understand a little more, yes I am registered with HMRC for Money Laundering and I have Insurance which covers Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, Legal Expenses and Personal Accident I was not aware of registering with Data Protection so I shall do that today, thank you so much for making me aware of this.
Donna, I live in Gillingham and I have family living in Ferndown so I am not far from you, yes I would be extremely interesting in contacting you regarding your Payroll courses, I shall follow the link you have provided above to contact you.
Again, thank you so much for your help ladies, have a great day
I'm hopeless at geography! I'm going to North Somerset, not North Dorset!! Well Wiltshire border actually, boy sitting! (nephew). Not sure if a meet up would be do-able from there and on that visit, but would certainly be great to meet with you at some point. Will see what is feasible on my trip.
Hi Bee
White label is where you subcontract out, eg the payroll, and no logos/contractors information is included on the paperwork, all of which is passed back to you for onward issuing to your customers and that way they think you do payroll, but someone else is doing it instead. I've done it for others on he as has John (Leger). Quite common with some things.
