First time this has happened on my watch, but one of my clients has had his tax refund delayed for "security reasons". They told me the other day that it could take up to the 12th June to be decided, but they told my client this morning it would be released on 17th May but could take until 12th June to reach (my) bank account.
Random checks or something more onerous?

One of my clients who was due a large refund did have a compliance check last year but I think that was only flagged as his turnover had reduced considerably due to semi-retirement, but the first I knew about it was receiving a letter from HMRC opening the enquiry.
Not had any problems so far this year but I have read a few things about refunds being held up and showing as "payment pending" the ones I have done have all come through within 2 weeks.
If CIS they might just be checking the figures on the return tally with theirs, so hopefully nothing to worry about

Like you say maybe they're just checking the figures, and this is random. First time this has happened to me so I've probably done well so far to be fair. I've got a very pee'd off client though (not with me)
