Good afternoon all!

I am new here seeking some guidance if possible and being more "involved" within the bookkeeping community.

I have currently just finished AAT level 3 and current work as an accounts assistant for a legal firm.

My aim is to start providing bookkeeping services but although I understand the theory of course, the "getting started" bit is what is holding me back.

Due to my full time job, im unable to shadow or obtain work experience really so im wondering if anyone can help guide me on how to get started with it. I have a friend who has a small café business who has asked me to do there bookkeeping which I feel im capable of doing once ive got the right "set up".

I have surfed the web and a lot of websites give guidance on what software, equipment etc but not any indepth help as such!

Many thanks

Hi Stephen

Advice - dont touch a cafe as a first customer/with no experience. Usually full of issues. Cash based so attract the attention of HMRC. Payrooll issues abound.

Besides if you are doing AAT then the ethics module should have guided you not to do business with friends, which is actually a good mantra to have in life anyway.

Do you have your AATQB licence - start with getting that if you havent already applied.

Please add your first name so that it appears under the sig bar on your posts - saves people looking it up each time.  (via edit profile, signature)/

LOTS on here about setting up - stick to the stuff from 2018.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

Hi Steven, and welcome to the forum.

Good advice there from Joanne.

Unless covered by AAT, you will also need to register for money laundering with HMRC.  Cost is £230 for the first year plus you also need to be an approved person, which HMRC will charge you another £40 one off fee.

As it happens I got my letter confirming I am an approved person yesterday.  Yay, it's only taken 6 months lol.

 Hi John

My application still pending and not even been asked for the extra £40 for the approval test yet, did they contact you separately about this payment?

Hi Doug

Nope, I've not been asked for payment, letter has just came totally out of the blue.  It's addressed to my home (well old address) rather than than the business.  I'm at home tomorrow so I'll post it up on here then

 No good to me because

Once saw my daft mate Dave dancing seductively in front of some farm machinery.  I said, "what the hell are you doing?"  He replied, "just been to Relate to sort out me marriage,  Counsellor said I should do something sexy to a tractor"

EDIT:  Altered garden machinery to farm machinery
