just about to sign up my 1st sole trader client. she wants me to set up her HMRC account. I have my agent code for SA.
can you tell me where I start first? do I register her as self employed and if so how? I can see a form that I can print from HMRC but can this be done online? is there a link you can supply please? Im going round in circles!
once I have her UTR I know I can then register for self assessment once I have gone through the authorisation process. I dont think you can authorise without a UTR, is this correct?
First of all congrats on your first SA bod. Is it your first client or have you primarily dealt with Ltds so far?
Log into your agent account and on the dashboard you should see underneath your services -register a client for new taxes. Click on that and you should then have the option to register for self assessment by ticking the appropriate box.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you go through all the screens. You get so far, think you've finished, log out and find the ***ing thing hasn't been registered. (although that maybe just me lol) You should then get an email confirmation although I always screenshot the acknowledgement screen as well. (1)
Once the client has given you the UTR go back into agent account and click on authorise a new client, enter the UTR and some other details and then go back and enter the code once you have it. It can then take up to 3 days to appear in your client list, although in practice I've found it's on there within a day.
(Theres a lovely little program called Lightshot that allows you just to grab the portion of screen you need to capture)

Any advice given is for general guidance and professional advice should be sought applicable to your circumstances.
Once registered your client should receive their UTR in the post which usually takes a few weeks, you will need this as well as their postcode to then apply through your agent account to register them as your client, they will then receive an activation code that they need to pass on to you, when you put that code in they should then show as a client on your agent account within 24hrs
EDIT Sorry John just seen you had already replied
