I read articles from both sides of the pond. The US isn't actually so very different in principle (quite different in practice) and there was an interesting article recently (might have been yesterday) about the issue that their accountants have which is very much echoed on this side of the pond.
This article includes elements that bookkeeprs too should ponder when acepting (or retaining) clients as my fear is that many clients rejected by accountants find more compliant representation elsewhere.

As you know, I deal exclusively with small businesses, which are price sensitive, and my prices reflect that. I've never really had any problems over price squabbling or haggling, I usually quote and it gets accepted. My prices are sufficient for me to earn a decent living on 20 hours paid work, which is all I'm after.
On the flip side of the coin I detest what I perceive to think of as opportunist pricing (aka as screw the client for as much as you can) As an example I read once of an accountant who's price was £750 for a client, but he plugged the service(s) into his snappy little pricing app and it said charge £1500!! If the accountant is happy at £750, why on earth should he charge £1500?

I think Shaun was trying to start a serious debate. Oops
lol.
sort of, just trying to give you all something to get your teeth into and start a debate but HMRC's MLR price hike has done that for me!
You do realise that might actually be professional bodies putting pressure on the powers that be to try to get people to become registered through their professional bodies.
Win Win for HMRC. If you a registered with them you pay through the nose. If you are registered with your own body you are someone elses problem.
... Right, I need to go to bed, only just finished work and I'm up again in three hours! fun, fun, fun.
Laters peeps

ha
We could easily start a debate/chat thread about lots of things on here. Trouble is - other than about 8 people nobody will join in. Shame.
That's better sitting in front of my computer instead of posting from my phone, well actually maybe not because I was in the pub when I posted earlier
Thanks for the link Joanne (sorry Shaun that your post has been hijacked) interesting read and good to see the views of others, I think the MLR issues are going to be talked about for quite a while after HMRC putting theirs up and then if the governing bodies have to be seen to do more then the only way that will go will be to follow suit and raise their fees, I was looking at moving from HMRC to a governing body, I had a quick look at AAT and it seemed that their prices to become a member and obtain a licence was not that different from what HMRC will be raising theirs to, still need to look at the ATT and IAB to see what those are.

I see that in April you were discussing the increase in fee for HMRC AML Supervision. The first I knew was when I renewed last week and £130 went up to £300.
Are the charges published anywhere or do only find out at renewal?
Have you been living under a rock Pete? We've been discussing it on here for a lot longer if memory serves, but you've not been a member that long so understandably you missed it.
Talking of which we are still awaiting your intro per hour last post. It is useful. No probs if you are QBE just handy to know the info, as its helps us to help you.
Price increase has been on HMRC for a while. Cannot recall if it was in an update from them or not.
edited to correct typos. Although totally pointless really.
