Do I need a HMRC Login?
Permalink Closed

Hi

Hoping someone can help me. I am employed as an Accounts Assistant at a Construction Company.  Our Accountants have always submitted our VAT Returns, CIS returns. The MD wants to take the filing of VAT and CIS in house with the responsibility falling to me.

Our accountants have been filing VAT through our accountancy package, Xero and they have been using Brightpay for our payroll, filing PAYE and CIS through this.

Do I need to let HMRC know that our accountants are no longer filing the VAT and that it will now be me. I am guessing that when Xero was first set up for filing VAT the accountant would have had to enter a government gateway login as an agent?

We have not yet signed up for MTD on Xero as not sure if a HMRC login will be requested.

I hope I have made sense?

Any help much appreciated

Speak to accountant. They should use agent login but some (wrongly) use clients, but you need to check and go from there.
Are you qualified to do returns especially in light of changes? If not push back on your employers.

Hi Thank you for responding.

I  have AAT level 3 and AATQB and currently studying AAT Level 4 as well as 5 years work experience. I have requested the information from our current Accountant, they are not very forthcoming as we have disengaged them, my MD does suspect they have been using our client login. I will wait and see what they come back with

Many Thanks

Hi Sara

That's highly possible seeing as it's your bookkeeping software, rather than their own.  Does Xero give the log in details for VAT that you can check?
