VAT Registration

Hi all (again)

Voluntarily registered a client for VAT (not MTD) and it is coming up to the 30 days on Tuesday, has anyone done any recently and how long did they take to get the registration, just wondering if because of MTD that everything else has been put on hold due to the lack of resources

Hi Doug
Im not specifically aware of any issues, although a mate of mine has been moved from IR35 projects to Bexit projects, so it could indeed now be the latter as well as MTD.

We went to Kamarina which is on Sicily.

I am not really personally a fan of the heat and as it tended to be around 30-32 C it was OK.

Finally got through to speak to someone at HMRC VAT registration, gave up in the end yesterday and spent most of today on and off trying and constantly being hung up on and being told they are too busy to take my call and to try again later, got through in the end at 16.50 to be told yes they had received the registration on July 23rd but another team is dealing with it and at the moment they are still dealing with applications going back to July 12th so it is going to be some time yet.

But they still expect my client to account for VAT from August the 1st which should be the EDR but not be able to charge it until he receives the number!!!!!!

Hot is good when there is a pool!

I believe the island is beautiful. Never been but an ex of mine was stationed (RAF) there for a short while so I got a few drunken calls from there!

 Not great is it.

You can charge the VAT, just have to be careful how you word the invoices, then follow it up with proper VAT invoices once you have the number.   Dumbed down version of the instructions (sorry!!!!!)    https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration

Thanks Joanne, yes I told him to increase his prices by 20% with a note at the bottom of the Invoice, not a problem as his clients are all VAT registered but he still needs to get the real VAT invoice issued so that the clients can claim it back which they can not do at the moment

Just an update, I asked the client if he had looked into his HMRC business account to see if he had any new messages concerning the application because even though they always email to say that you have a new message that needs to be opened I thought it was worth a look and yes he did have a message, he sent me his login details so I could have a look myself and there was a message dated 25th July only 2 days after the application saying

'we have selected your recent application for further checks and need more information'

like supplier and customer signed contracts, a selection of purchase and sales invoices to show trading activity and confirmation of the date of first taxable supply as well as bank statements

This had to be sent within 10 days which is now well overdue!

When I spoke to someone on Wednesday they said nothing about this only that they were still dealing with applications from July 12th

Has anyone dealt with anything like this before?

Its a good job I am going away tomorrow because I am seriously thinking of packing all this in, just totally fed up with it and it is mainly down to HMRC!!!!!

My family managed to get my into the pool most days (which is quite unusual)

My daughter (13) wanted to try sailing which we managed twice which was good.

We tended, however, to stay on the venue rather than go around the island.   It was interesting, however, to see the storks nesting on the top of electricity pylons on the way to the venue.

I am sooooo with you on the last line, increasingly so, every day chipping away.   Was considering reducing down to just a couple of my biggish clients but I know changes are afoot with one of them, so thats probably not a great idea on the whole any one client shouldnt be more than 15% of your turnover rule.   As its one of the better ones, that would leave me with the ones I have to constantly harangue to get the slightest detail from  - which is where I dont want to be!  Reckon by the time 2020 ticks around then I will be done.

Anyway on to your problem for today (although hopefully you have already flown out of the UK by now!). Im with Casu on this one, although I couldve sworn I saw something on Aweb a while back. I might have it wrong and that mightve just been a general query by HMRC post registration, pre VAT refund, rather than what my little brain is telling me is a weird request PRE registration when someone is trying to register to presumably pay them some VAT.   Apart from of course, if its going to be a constant, or obvious first, refund position type client. Is it one of those?   Or is it one who has been around the block a few times and has something flagging up with HMRC from his UTR/NI number type scenario?

I tried to find the post I was thinking of an Aweb, but have failed miserably! Sorry cant be any help.

I have to agree it does sound like a strange request. I had one last year where they wanted further details of the business before issuing a VAT number. His was a new Ltd Co so couldn't have provided invoices or bank statements. He is in the construction industry and I know Doug has a few clients in that sector so I'm wondering if there's a connection there?

Might have been you who I saw a comment from, rather than Aweb. Could be the construction angle (reverse charge upon us and all that in addition to their usual love of the industry!)

Just got on a train at Liverpool St heading up to Stansted Airport Yes new Ltd Co set up in the construction industry although the director had been a sole trader for many years under CIS and always kept his tax affairs up to date, have given him the VAT registration teams number and told him to phone them on Tuesday to find out what is going on (ha ha) Thanks for the replies

Nearly 7 weeks now and still no VAT number, client phoned them while I was away and they explained what they needed and for him to email it to them so they could continue with the application, email kept failing so he phoned them back and it turns out the email address was for the wrong department and the other department only has a postal address, by now he is totally fed up (welcome to our world) and waited for me to return, so I printed all the information and posted it recorded delivery which I tracked and saw it was signed for on Wednesday, phoned again yesterday and they said it has been received and it was now with the security checks team.

Fingers crossed maybe next week disbelief.gif

I registered a client in November and it was done by the end of December.
I've never got a delay of more than 2 months.
