A business wants to hire an independent contractor to perform various task (eg. personal assistant).
The tasks, which the contractor needs to perform, require the contractor to occasionally make purchases (eg. book a flight ticket).
The contractor invoices after providing the service (eg. at the end of a month). The business wants to provide a 'petty cash-type' sum for the contractor to draw from, when making purchases (eg. beginning of a month), which would be replenished, once it goes below a certain amount.
1) what paperwork would be required for this from the contractor / company?
2) in the company's books, which account would this be posted to?
3) in the contractor's books, which account would this be posted to?
Of course the contractor could have a 'remote' PA, but when you start giving them cash up front that opens up the issue Caron mentions. Sounds like NI avoidance.
You dont state if your client is Limited or not.
So the question has to be why an independent contractor?
Who is your client? Both of them? Is one of them you (the PA perhaps)? What else does the supposed indep contractor do for an income?
Opening up a whole can of worms here.
You could maybe consider client moneies - but care you (your client) need to read the legislation and ensure you comply with all of it. Probably not really worth all the effort on an admin basis (plus all the extra accounting side!). Surely easier to add someone to the books on a zero hours contract and just do the odd hour or so when required.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

Thank you very much for your informative answers! I can see that there is more to consider than I thought... Thanks again.
Would be good if we actually had the answers to the questions - they are not rhetorical, but more issues can be mentioned when in receipt of the full facts.
Otherwise its very frustrating.
or not. I won't be answering any more questions.

I would suggest you put the load on the Company books. The contractor you are hiring is a piece.
I did give you the opportunity to introduce yourself and become part of the community here.
You have not posted anything beyond twitter level snippets rather than the expected level of detail. This one "Put the load on the company books" without supporting evidence is not the sort of advice that I want on here as many of the readers are only just learning and they will not know what advice to ignore like the plague and what should be listened to.
I think that the second sentence was cut short? As with Joanne it made no sense to me.
Shaun.

You were all wrong. Not American at all.... This one was Jammu, Kashmir, India... Why do I sound surprised.
Star prize goes to Joanne who spotted on the first post that it was Veis in the early build stage.
I know, I'm the eternal optimist but I always have this fear that I could end up dropping someone from the site who turns out to be a great contributor so I try to give them all the initial benefit of the doubt... You would think that I would learn by now.
All the best,
Shaun.

In what way does the first sentence make any sense?!
Hiya hun,
It did to me but it was dangerously simplistic.
The poster should have explained the Imprest system for cash management rather than assuming in any way that the purchases were not being recorded in the books.
Unfortunately I don't think that can be done in 140 characters or less (actually, think that its more than that now but guess I'll never know... They lost me at restricting the volume of letters at all).
Shaun.

I didnt even see this post snook in with the others.
Did I say American? I cannot recall saying that. I did indicate Next (not the shop) and Sage (but the QB one not the Sage sage one!), which as we know has dumpers from anywhere other than America anyway.

Guess we'll never know as they never actually posted the proper intro which was requested.
When asking the question of people in some parts of the world I think that its also an idea to ask "And did you sit the exam yourself"!.... Ooh, biting sarcasm... I think that I'm almost ready for Aweb

That would be my ninja posting skills
I thought that John did and then it went into a discussion about Vinces word for Americans.
I'm probably mixing up a couple of threads in my head. Sorry.

Bloody hell man - putting words in my mouth now!
Always said you were far too subtle and that the majority of your subtle posts on here went way over the recipients heads!
Stupid - far from it. Oh now you are dragging the flattery out of me!
I was told to 'f**k off' on aweb the other day, although I wouldnt advocate that much directness (the guy who said was being a complete t**t and it shouldve been me saying that to him, except Im too much of a laydeee).

Ahh, must be the Veisroy of India himself
Well he didn't condescend to answer is lordship the mod man, so I think you must be right.
Anyone giving any odds on him being back with some other randomly sounding English/American name with a possible sex change thrown in before the week is out/early doors next week?
