Client has 3 tax returns still to complete of which the oldest is 2013-14. This is outside the filing window and client has asked what happens now. My thoughts were that they would estimate it but all I can see online are the penalties for that year.
He doesn't have any details for that year other than he did a few cash jobs and bought and sold a few cars but thinks nett income would have been around £8-10k.

Hi John
So they have been sent a tax return for the 2013 - 2014. Were they in self assessment the prior year? Doing the same or similar work? Am wondering if HMRC have made a determination but its just that you cannot see it on the agent account? If they havent made a determination I understand that they are out of time. BUT, I would perhaps be putting this to our technical friends as to how to check the determination position, then next steps including some guidance on the parts of the TMA you can rely on, unless you have time for a lot of reading. Hopefully the likes of TD/Wilson Phillips etc can assist, although you know the best way to get more info from them is to throw in some research findings if you can.
Other thoughts - did he have any other income in that year? Coming from the angle of loss of tax penalties/discovery regime as this could be considered deliberate or negligent behaviour, so another Q - what was he living off if that was all of his income? Does he lifestyle support that income?

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
There is a return for 08/09 which has been submitted then the next one is 13/14 and then 16/17 17/18 both of which have not been submitted. The 18/19 one was submitted when the client came to me last April.
All I know is what he's told me plus his partner was working.
I'll look into it further in February as I also need to speak to him more regards the latter two years.
As always thanks for your advice, it's put me in the right direction to follow it up.
