Change address for VAT
Permalink Closed

Evening all

I am trying to get authorisation to act for a new client with VAT, I have now realised that they have not updated their address since moving so any codes that are sent will be going to their old address and they do not have a Gov Gateway account as their previous accountant dealt with everything on their behalf am I correct that the only other way to change the address is by using a VAT484 form and posting it ? Or would they be able to phone the VAT helpline and change it.

Cheers

Sorry Doug, not sure of the answer to this one. But I'll post some jokes on the Friday thread if I have time  - you can always read them if you end up stuck on hold to HMRC !

Hi Doug
Have you sent a 64-8 in?

If you have they should (technically!) still attach the VAT record to your old agent account, then you can adjust the address.

If you haven't I would say send VAT484.

He could try phoning - success will depend on who he gets on the day. Have done it this way in the past but usually when HMRC have fluffed it and/or put a stop on the VAT returns due to address issues and of course they then want their tax take!. They will probably try to persuade him to open a BTA, he must decline if he really doesnt want one (depends on his view!). I tend to try and sit with a client whilst they do this - get them to do the ID and put them through to you....seems to work better in majority of cases. Assuming client is not a remote one!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

Thanks for the replies

Hi Joanne,

Not sent in a 64-8, tend do most authorisations online these days, but even then I don't think you can change the clients registered address by using my agent account for VAT.

I would otherwise try to phone with the client next to me as I have done so in the past but the client is in London and I am in sunny Wales disbelief so in the end I emailed them the VAT484 and hopefully this will get the address updated fairly quickly.

Thanks again
