Amended return in Taxfiler

Just a quickie as on my phone, if someone (sole trader) has filed a return using HMRC software but messed it up can I now file an amended return using Taxfiler or does it have to be on the HMRC software?

Hi Doug
Funnily enough there were several issues in January around sending 1st SA returns whilst having the 'amended' box ticked in Taxfiler, in error. It did cause some problmes with penalties.

So whilst not a definitive answer, assuming Taxfiler havent updated their system to prevent this 'problem' then you could be in luck.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

Hi Doug

I can't see it being a problem.  Tick the amended box obviously.

Hi Joanne

Did that once with a client.  It goes through but HMRC still waits for the original. 1st I knew was when client rang me back end of the Feb asking why he'd got a penalty.  Phoned up agent helpline and got it sorted and penalty was cancelled.

Thanks both, I will give it a go, I don't think I could handle going back to the HMRC software
