I've been asked to register a new client for VAT, it's a job I do very rarely so please bare with me.
I've logged into our new Agents services account and there doesn't seem to be the option to do the registration on-line, the instructions seem to suggest that the client needs to log into their gateway and complete this process, it that right?? I believe we usually charge for setting up the VAT registration, so we are still keen to be able to do this for them.
I could set up a government gateway on behalf of the client and do the registration process that way? Or will the old system work if I sign into our old gateway and request to become an agent and then do the VAT registration that way followed by registering them for MTD?
Just go into your old Gov Gateway and on the left you should see 'register client for new taxes' and register them for VAT that way, no need to be their agent just fill out the form, last one i did came back in 3 days.
I have never charged for this though, seems a bit strong for 5 minutes work if you are getting a new client out of it

I do it the same way that Doug has described. It's generally pretty quick to get the VAT number through and then you just apply for auth online. I also charge clients for VAT registrations.
