I wondered what peoples thought are on this please.
I've been put in a position where I have been asked to log into a clients bank account to connect bank feeds and print off bank statements. However, I believe the details I was being given was the clients login, which I was very uncomfortable with taking and so I refused to take the information.
Is this normal to have access to clients bank accounts !!! I have had clients wanting to give me their bank details in the past, but have always refused unless they put me on the bank mandate with read-only access, as that way I feel protected if their bank account is compromised for any reason.
The difficulty is that I believe these login details have already been given to at least three other people, one of whom I have never met. If the clients bank account is compromised, then how can I protect myself from any false accusations? Is it normal to have such access to clients bank accounts?
I just feel like I'm being awkward in refusing, but there could be a lot of money in the bank account, and the consequences, in an unlikely event that money goes missing for any reason, could be jail !!! Am I wrong ?
I have no problem helping them set up the bank feeds, but I suspect that they just don't have the time to do it, and that's why they handed the bank login details over to my manager. The trouble is that these login details have been handed over to several people, one of whom has left the company, and I think the least we should do is to change the password.
I'm going to ring the client I think and speak to them, but if my manager had taken the bank details from them, I'm not sure they are going to understand why I don't want to take the details off my manager, and obviously he isn't going to want to be taking on the job of downloading bank statements and setting up bank feeds.
I just feel I've been put in an awkward position really
Yes, regardless of how you sort out the bank feeds, this client needs to be given a good talking to on the subject of security. You are absolutely right to be unwilling to accept shared log-in details for a bank account.
