As the title says, I am hoping someone here can advise me on what software to use for "Making Tax Digital".
My husband and I have a VAT-registered small business (a limited company), which to be honest does very little business these days. HMRC have said that we must start keeping digital accounts using MTD-compatible software, and the VAT return must be filed via this software.
Having done the company accounts and taxes for more than 25 years I am familiar with basic accounting concepts, but I am not a qualified bookkeeper. So I am seeking software which is easy for a "lay person" to use. The company's VAT affairs are straightforward.
Due to the very small profits the company makes, I am looking for software that is either free (preferable) or very, very cheap.
The "Find software for Making Tax Digital for VAT" page on the HMRC website provided the following list:
#1 ANNA free VAT filer
#GoFile
Adminsoft Ltd
Bokio
Brightbook
Bx
Cirrostratus Exedra
Cuimake MTD for Ecommerce
Easy MTD VAT
FreeAgent
FSB Making Tax Digital
MTDsorted
Open Answers Limited (Portico Free)
QuickFile
VATIFY
Zoh
At the moment these are all just names to me. Does anyone have any views on which I should pick? Or avoid?
Perhaps it is relevant to say that we used Sage Line 50 back in the day, so I know how to use that. Mind you, I hated it
You don't say if you are looking for accounting software or just a bridging (filing) solution. If bridging I would suggest one of the first two. If software then the bottom three are all free (Ive added Pandle as I've used it myself) Freeagent is only free if you have a business account with Natwest or Mettle)
If you can manage £75 a year then I would heartily recommend VT Transaction +. Theres a 60 days trial and it really is one of the best non cloud accounting systems around, imo.
